With the purchase of the Dixi automobile works in Eisenach, Thuringia in 1928, BMW came into ownership of steel stamping machinery. This they put to use on the R11/[url=http://www.vintagebmw.org/v7/model/r16]R16[/url] models to eliminate the continuing problems with the old brazed tubular frames that had a tendency to crack, especially under hard sidecar usage.
Motor numbers are arranged into the model years and "Series Numbers" as follows:
