R71 Update

Post by meredith7493 »

It's been a long road since I bought a 1938 R71 from Bonhams a couple of years ago. As it turned out, this BMW only had two owners and was originally imported to the UK. So the Provenance was a total surprise to me. The toughest finds were a pair of Graetzin carbs, and some original cylinders (thank you Richard S)

It finally made it around the block, and I thought I'd post a picture. There is still more work as these restorations always seem to need something.

Paul

Nice!

CT showed me your before pix. Nice job Paul. I just picked up a 41. I was always intriqued by a sidevalve BMW though. They're sweet.

You make a solid historical study and work in detail. I learned a lot watching your work. It is very useful for me and the renovation of my R51. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me and hope to see you again.

Paul's R71

Post by R66RODENT »

Look what happened while I was snoozing. That's one tasty restoration, Paul. What a beautiful bike. Hope you can put some miles on it soon. Somer's R71 looks very nice too. My R66 now has 2,000+ miles on it, and is pretty thoroughly debugged. The brakes suck though, so I suppose I'll have to deal with them before too long. However, the bike is reliable.

Riding Into History

Post by meredith7493 »

Thanks for all the compliments. We are back from and extended cruise an it looks like the first "public" viewing will be at the Ride In History on May 18. I'm going to bring the R71 and R52. Now all I have to do is find a trailer, as my current one is a single place.
