I haven't tried it, and I think that the two together would be very unwieldy (eg, likely to scar the paint on the frame), but I think you might be able to get them in as a unit, with the battery tray out and the axis of the unit tilted down in front so that the nose of the motor is down between the frame rails. Are you going to have a couple of helpers?

Put the engine inside the frame rails, and put some wood or a milk crate to hold/support the engine, and scoot it forward a few inches, then slide the trans in and bolt it to the engine, lthen slide the engine rearward and then line up the holes and slide the motor mount bolts in.........

I installed the clutch.

Post by AKHANZ »

Engine still need electricals and the clutch assembly. I have installed the clutch assembly in reverse of disassembly... pie plate spring with prongs aft, then flexible disk, clutch friction disk, and lastly the back friction plate. All aligned and tightened down using blue thread lock... snugg..and some.
Then just for grins... I did a check with the tranny. It argued a bit and then finally went in... attached the nuts and bolts just snug.
Attached the clutch actuator assemble... and tested.. it did the final minor adjustment and works.. turned the motor with the crank and actuated the lever several times to make sure all was fitting right.

I then separated the tranny from engine.. then.... as I am doing my research.. (I have lots of time, end of March is my goal. I can really over think the whole thing, to get it right.)

I have a question???? My R50 never had a rubber cup on the back of the clutch actuator system.. Is there one there in the normal stock version?

thanks for the input.

The parts fiche doesn't show one...I don't recall seeing one on my R69S. The very first /5 series does show it on the fiche.

I believe that there is a rubber cap on the neutral light switch adjacent to the clutch hole; at least there was on my R27.

Yes, the neutral light switch

Yes, the neutral light switch has a rubber cover, but the thrust piece for the clutch rod does not. Just rechecked my R25/2 and R69S...neither has anything on the clutch rod.

The rubber cover is pink with silver paint.. So, no boot for the early models..

I will post pics as I get the unit together.. I have to install the magnito system and the generator and firing system.. points..

stand by... it is the holiday season. No snow here yet.

I installed the magnito system

Post by AKHANZ »

Just sitting there, studying the front of the motor. The rotor is a brass faced set of magnets with two marks firmly etched in the front at 180 out from each other. North and South so to speak. I notice that the rotor was loose on the nose of the cam shaft.. I guess, that I figures that it was indexed and had a key to set it in the proper timing place relative to the firing marks on the flywheel.

Nope... totally adjustable. Put the 'S' mark in the window on the line rotating the flywheel clockwise as you look from the back of the engine.. then set the marks on the rotor N and S, loosely. It all made perfect sense. The flywheel then the came which drive the lobes on the advancer. All lined up and magnito body centered then slightly all snugged.
Next set the points to the max opening at the top of the lobes.. good.

Now the true test is: Marks the same for each N / S settings? At the end of the day, mine were within 1/4" on the flywheel. The book says it is the difference in the lobes on the advancer and this small amount is not a huge issue.
So there I am.. the truth will be told on startup and final tinkering.. but now I know what I am dealing with and how to adjust and or advance or retard the engine to bring it into closer balance. I think it is set up closely enough that I can adjust the breaker plate or the magnito housing to adjust for the best performance.

A fun and interesting exercise.
