R90-S Pinstripe Information

Post by brook.reams »

Folks,

Finishing up a build of an R75/6 into a "look alike" R90S. Paint scheme is smoke silver. From web pictures, I see single pin striping on the fairing and front fender and double pinstripping on the tank. Correct?

From a forum posting, I see the double pinstripe is 1/8 inch bottom, 1/16 inch top. Correct?

BUT, I'm not sure what the thickness of the single pinstripes are?

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

You can see the project web page here: brook.reams.me.

Best.

I don't think that's right.

I don't think that's right. I believe that all the pinstripes are single. The 1974 bikes had taped stripes, 75 and 76 hand painted. Although my bike is a repaint, it was done by Holt (before I owned it), and I have to assume that he did it correctly.

My '75 DO and the other R90S

Post by Bruce Frey »

My '75 DO and the other R90S pix I have close at hand (also DO) have double stripes on the tank. Do SS bikes have a different scheme? Unfortunately, I can't measure my stripes for another 3 weeks :-(

I should have looked it up

I should have looked it up the first time. In Andy Schwietzer's book, Boxer Volume I - All Airheads with Twin Shocks, he has several color photos of the SS and DO bikes, and the DOs have double lined red stripes while the SSes have single lined gold stripes.

Folks, Thanks for the input.

Folks,

Thanks for the input. There is difference between the Daytona Orange and Smoke Silver. I was not looking closely enough and had a DO picture assuming the SS was identical ... taint so :-)

Thanks.

BTW, I noticed that

BTW, I noticed that Schwietzer's Boxer book was not in our Bibliography section, so I scanned the cover and a couple pages and did a quick write up of it

There is a big difference

Post by TonyR90S »

There is a big difference between the pinstriping of the R90S first series and the one of 2nd/3d series.

First series, MY 1974 (had only Silberrauch color):
adhesive pinstripe (it was the only one BMW with adhesive pinstripe). Single pinstripe on tank, seat cowl, front fender, fairing.

Second and Third series (MY 1975, MY 1976 - both Silberrauch and Daytona Orange): hand painted pinstripe.
Single pinstripe on the tank of Silberrauch color.
Double pinstripe on the tank of Daytona color.
Single pinstripe on front fender, seat cowl, fairing for both the colors.

NO pinstriping on the rear fender (never on the 90s, of every series).

BMW color code of the gold pinstripe: 104
BMW color code of the red pinstripe: 107

Hope this helps...
