I'd say the valve was out of adjustment for some time, is the lock nut on the wrong side of the adjuster? Looks to me like the push rod just got hammered flat from running it too loose.

Interesting. I would say it was very loose for a long time and over rev'ed maybe. Did it make noise for a long time or just all of a sudden?

late to this party I know -
but the original response to the initial question
should have been :

COMPRESSION TEST


COMPRESSION TEST


COMPRESSION TEST

no compression = no run and go from there determining
where did it go?
Valve clearance would be first, and then the cause
would have been found without fussing down the other deadends

COMPRESSION TEST FIRST ON ANY OLD MOTOR
before proceding - especially when you know you have
spark and gas
