R90S - Fairing Mounting Details

Post by brook.reams »

Folks,

I'm doing a build of my R75/6 into an R75S including the R90S bullet fairing and smoke silver paint scheme. I've gotten a used R90S fairing and mounting hardware. BUT, the details of how to mount the fairing to the forks isn't clear to me.

According to MAX BMW on-line parts fische, there is a "shackle" used to mount the fairing (part number below):
31421240651 SHACKLE (BLACK)

What I'm not sure about is where the shackle attaches on the forks (I assume the large hole in the shackle is for the fork tube).

I'd appreciate either a picture of the mounting details of the shackle on the fork tube, or a description using the one of the MAX BMW parts fiche exploded views of the front suspension (series 31, diagrams 31-0301 through 31-0311). You can view these using this link:
http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/ ... 974-061976

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Best.

I've not seen one of these

Post by schrader7032 »

I've not seen one of these fairings up close, although I think a friend has this type of fairing on his '76 R90S. I did look at some of the fiches (ETK is what I have) and see the shackle. I can't imagine what else it would attach to except the large nut on the top of the fork tubes. But I wonder if this shims the fork cap nut too high, reducing the theads that engage into the top of the tubes. Unless this shackle is designed to pick up one of the holes in the upper triple tree.

Not sure when I'll get a chance to see the local R90S. If I do and can see what's going on, I'll let you know. I may try and call him and see if he can shoot some pictures.

I do have a 1/10 scale model at home...I wonder if it has sufficent detail....

For what it's worth, my scale

Post by schrader7032 »

For what it's worth, my scale model at home does show the shackles underneath the fork cap. The micro fiche show a large cap that probably threads into the fork cap nut...it appears to be a cosmetic thing. My scale model also shows a "shiney" cap which covers the hex cap nut in the fork. It's possible that the shackle makes use of the cosmetic cap rather than the actual fork cap nut.

Hi Kurt, Well, shucky darn on

Post by brook.reams »

Hi Kurt,

Well, shucky darn on the model :-( Indeed, if you get a chance to send some pictures, that would resolve the question. However, you do make some suggestions about possible places for the shackle to mount. I suspect I can try a bit of "see what looks right" and go from there.

Thanks.

Best.

I called my local R90S owner

I called my local R90S owner but I was mistaken...he rides the bike naked. The fairing was sold by his brother before he got it.

There are a few others on the list who have an R90S...better wait until they have a chance to respond.
