i saw a r60/5 that has been restored and it runs and looks like new. they want 4500- 5000 for it. any opinions or suggestions. thanks

One can find a 900 or 1000cc BMW from the 70's for about that price. I suppose it depends on how well the restoration went, who did it, what was done, and any documentation to support the restoration. The R60/5 and /6 were somewhat underpowered and prone to pinging. They had high compression and an aggressive cam profile which left little margin for error with timing. There are ways around that. One is with a base gasket to reduce the compression ratio. Another is to use an after market electronic ignition such as a Boyer which delays the advance curve.

A bigger machine could be had for this amount of money, but if it fits your style and abilities, it might work out OK.
