Wheel clening

Post by VBMWMO »

Has anyone out there got a good way to clean the snowflake wheels from the early 80's?
Are they painted?... I don't think so and if not, bead blasting will surely work as a last resort. I've tried the usual wheel cleaners and brake dust removal stuff, but they didn't work to well, still have that dirt deep down in the creavases near the hubs. The latest thing I've tried is a marine product called SLX. It's for cleaning outdrives and such, but for the bare aluminum on my 66, it's a miricale product!! Gets rid of that white build up really nicely! I couldn't belive how well it cleaned up the hubs after 25 years. Give it a try. It is sulfuric acid in a jelly like consistancy. Put it on with a scrubbie , wait 10-15 minutes and hose it off. Don't get it on your hands. I've also seen it in Wynn Dixie as a floor cleaner, same thing but a little more diluted.
Thanks
