Hello,

I am attempting to install a new switch on my 67 BMW R50/2. Although I thought I replicated the old wiring positions somehow I didn't and light is not working. I looked at the wiring schematic for this bike and the wires are not same as listed. I am hoping that someone will be able to help me match the correct wires to the correct terminals.

Colors listed GE( Geld ) Yellow, WS ( Wiese ) White, GN ( Green) GE-WE ( Green/White). Wire colors on bike. Black, Brown , Blue, Blue Green.

thanks

On similar topic, the headlight will run off of Magneto but will not turn on when bike is not running ? Could this be the Voltage Regulator ? The battery is charged and switch seems to work

thanks

The magneto and the charging circuits are independent of each other so no the voltage regulator would not be the problem

The headlight works when running or not running

Headlight should go on as long as you have a good battery, key is down and turned clockwise

The headlight does not run off the magneto. The magneto is ignition only.

The headlight brightens with RPM’s and is off at idle. It does seem to run off the magneto but this bike is new to me and I am not familiar with the magneto/battery systems. Thanks

It brightens when you increase engine RPM since the charging system is getting more efficient and dumping more into the battery. The lights run off of what's in the battery.

Hi Blaster-
As Tommy/Chris/Kurt are saying the magneto energizes the sparkplugs, period.
The generator energizes the battery.
The battery energizes the lights.
When the battery is crap, the generator energizes the lights directly, and if not turning at sufficient rpm, the generator will not produce enough energy, and the lights will dim or go out.
Best-
George

I am getting more confused as I try to understand the headlight mystery. The headlight was working until I replaced the dimmer switch. I am reasonable certain that the dimmer switch correctly but the wiring insulation is very brittle and cracked in many places.
I checked voltage ( with key off !? ) and get 6v at all terminals but light is not on. I can understand that the wires are shorting out in the harness but I don't understand why my light is not on?
thanks
