Dual disc for a 1976 R90/6.

Post by jayte711 »

What parts are needed to convert a 1976 R90/6 to front dual disc? Any good sources for locating new/used parts for this project? Thank you.

I think you will find you will need a new master cylinder. As well as the mirror parts to the existing system.

You might get lucky and find that the early /7 forks and parts for bikes with the ATE brake calipers might fit or match your existing fork leg and brake side. This might give you a bigger batch of parts to source.

A check of parts on Max's microfiche would confirm this.

As for sources, try Recycle, or Motobins. Or, you can take a chance on Ebay or any of the various club market places.St.

Hello,
I have a front end off an R90s with the calipers. Might even have the lines and master cylinder.

I just went through a bunch of research on this. (Lots more w/ a far higher level of expertise here than me, though.) I installed a R90X kit on my /6. (Consists of an adapter for the wheel to bolt up a Ducati 320mm Disc and an adapter to mount the radial caliper from a BMW R1000SS.) That caliper or similar, and of course the stock ATE, will work w/ the stock 14mm master cylinder, but if you go w/ dual disk, stock calipers or otherwise, you'll need the larger 16mm master.

If I did my research and was careful I wouldn't hesitate to buy from eBay. For what it's worth, you can use a left side fork leg on the right if you take it to a machine shop and have the axle hole machined for the size of the right side end of the axle. EDIT: You don't need to do this if you are just using right side caliper and disc and switching from a left side brake to a right side brake. Just switch sides w/ the fork lowers and then put the front axle through from left to right rather than right to left as normal.

As a side note: RePsycle is about 65 mi from where I live but they closed up shop as of the first of the year. I guess they'll take in-house buyers by appointment only until they sell. Last I heard was they were hoping to sell the business complete but if that doesn't happen they'll auction.

Thank you for your reply. Pretty trick install and good looking. Is that a Lester mag? I called the guys in Ohio, they didn't have any parts I could use. Will search the forums and ebay. Or maybe just buy a newer bike.

Not to be a jerk or burst your bubble however, parts to do what you want to do may be difficult to find. I say this as you are not the only one who wants to go dual.

The good news is there maybe parts out there from someone who switched from the ATE dual brakes to Brembo brakes.

I did that swap on my 78RS and was quite happy with the Brembo set up.

LOL, so maybe you will find dual ATE front ends easier.

Finding the Brembo parts was a long process and I got lucky to spot an ad on Market Place for a custom bike shop selling a complete Brembo front end as he was tricking out the bike he was building with OM forks and stuff. Good hunting St.

Thank you. Yes, I've acquired a set of Lesters for my /6. Double luck really; found a set and didn't pay much. I was going to re-lace my stock wheels but I hate cleaning spokes so I was happy to find the Lesters. I've seen them on eBay occasionally, have patience, they're out there.
