Doing what you are doing is only a bad thing IF you sell the bike to someone else. Then your modifications can become previous owner's disease for the next owner.

I spent a week working on a R75/5 who's previous owner had cobbled in after market turn signals as well as other fast cheap fixes, The fellow who now owns this bike was frustrated after buying his first /5 to find out so much wrong with the bike.

I have also seen BMW bikes come into my friend's shop with all kinds of aftermarket or non BMW stuff added on to replace the stock parts. Things like this cost someone money and frustrates people who want a BMW bike and expect it to be a BMW bike.
