Offset Footrests on 1967 R60/2

Post by Worleybird89 »

While tinkering with carbs today, with the air intake tubes removed, I discovered something I have never noticed before. The left and right footrests on my '67 R60/2 are offset by about the same amount as the cylinder heads (LHS farther forward than RHS). Is this normal? The attachment points on the frame are also offset, but in the opposite direction (RHS farther forward). It is obvious the RHS footrest is longer, and I see in the parts catalog that the LHS should be 90mm and the right, 140mm. Is one of these in the pictures wrong for this bike? I haven't measured them yet. My dad bought this bike in 2005 or 2006 and added the sidecar. He says he never noticed this, and never changed them. I got it from him in 2018 and I just noticed.

:D Normal. In fact after 40 years of riding like that I tend to ride with the left side of my body further forward on any motorcycle I ride.
One reason for the offset is the side kick start clearance.

It wouldbe very un-usual though if the mounts on the frame are offset as you describe, as they go on the same engine bolt.

Yea the mounts on the frame are not offset
Easy to push down on the right hand side for the brake pedal
Left side is shorter so your toe can lift up on the shifter

The most important reason in my opinion is the clearance you have from the cylinders and carburetors. For those who insist on wearing lace up boots or shoes it helps to avoid laces and such getting hung up on the adjustment screws. It only happened to me once and fortunately my knee cap survived the landing.

Bell-bottom trousers also catch the top of CV carbs very neatly, leading to embarassment and entertainment for onlookers.
