Best handlebars for BMW

Post by fuzzymuzzie »

Hi:
My 1965 R69s came with originally with the US high bars, very rusty now. I bought what was supposed to be german made high bars, the chrome was terrible. I doubt if it was copper, nickel chrome although the originals most likely were not. I bent the chrome plated stainless steel risers I bought to get over the 22mm US high bars. I did it little at a time but still got a small amount of buckling of the chrome, not happy with the result.
These bars being sold are all around $69 to $85 how can they do a good chrome job for that amount, especially if they are European made. I did see a set of low bars from Max BMW for $190, (part number: 32710015917) which have the Hella notches and exit hole for wire, sourced by BMW made in Germany. There is also part number 32712072129 for $117, it too has the notches and hole for Hellas. They say they are not sourced from BMW, but made in Germany.
I am not sure I want to repeat trying to bend the risers to get over the bars, even though with the low bars they will still need to be spread a bit to go over the two radiuses. So what has everyone done, re-chromed their originals and bend the original risers twice more? Or is there a good set of bars out there somewhere. I have bought numerous items twice trying to restore this bike, I do not think the chrome on any of these bars are going to meet my expectations, so considering buying a set of bars and just have them re-chromed with the copper/nickel/chrome process.
I need some input to make an intelligent decision, this time.

MARK+SWISS has very nice bars , I just put these low bars on my 1958 R69. Very easy to get risers on them. I think these look the best and I think they are very comfortable. They just look so “right” with the low bars. The high bars do look ok with large tank and solo seat, but Euro low bar is most attractive IMO.

I put these onto my '51 R67 and will do the same for my R69. They came from Meyers in Germany. IMHO the low bars suit these models the best. Meyers typically state whether the parts are aftermarket, these are not to the best of my knowledge. Reasonably priced at 35.29 EUR but shipping won't be cheap owing to their length.

I think the USA type bar was designed for the America style of sitting-up-erect riding? I guess the European style is more crouched riding position?

Fuzzy, you started by asking about mounting the higher bar with the cross brace, so I'm thinking you like a higher bar. Then everyone started talking about euro flat bars. Keep in mind that you can use /5/6/7 bars with the /2 riser pretty easily because there is no cross brace. I find this medium rise bar to be a nice compromise to the low euro bar, https://vintagebeemerparts.com/vintage- ... ce-chrome/ .

I have never had a problem spreading the risers for US high bars. Very soft metal. So soft that over the years the clamping area stretches, requiring shimming or filing the bolt area. US bars are much better for distance riding. You can still bend your elbows and crouch as much as you want.
