1983 R100 clutch cable

Post by SDCR »

Not sure how old my current clutch cable is, so I am going to replace it.

My new BMW cable, has a hexagon shaped brass part, that is on the perch end. The old cable, has a round brass piece, at the perch end.

So, will this hexagon shaped end, be compatible on my cable perch? Or, do I have the incorrect clutch cable?

Seems to be the right part number. Maybe BMW has opted to go with just one style of fitting. Who did you get it from? Can you call and check to confirm and explain your issue?

I'd still call up my favorite dealer...MaxBMW has a pretty good Airhead department...and ask them some questions. Tell them your situation.

Worth a try, as I do buy stuff from them.

I could be wrong but isn't there a part number on the cable itself? A quick look at Max's online parts microfiche will show what cable your bike should have as well as giving you a way to search for what application the cable you have on hand is. Good luck. St.

SDCR;

I don't see what difference it makes. It looks as though the hexagonal shape is in the section that holds the cable. It looks as though the business end on the nipple is round brass. I think that so long as it fits in the nipple holder in the clutch lever it will work just fine.

Late reply on this.

BMW changed cable suppliers in the early 2000s. The new vendor introduced the hexagonal die. This has been written in other forums in the past, some of those were slightly oversized or had a burr and did not rotate freely in the “barrel”. That binding caused premature breakage of those clutch cables. So inspect those newer style hexagonal crimps for any burrs and make sure they rotate freely in the barrel part. Lightly lubricate the components with your favorite light grease and clean and relube on occasion, depending on your riding style.

Thanks Chris.
So are you suggesting that I don’t need to file off the “edges”, to round out the hexagon?

Here's a picture of the setup on my /7. Amazingly, it appears that the lever-end of my clutch cable is hex shaped!! I replaced that back in 1983 and don't remember any issues.

That said, what you want to see is in these pictures. The cable must fit into the round part that is in the handle...I don't remember what it looks like though. When you pull the hand lever, this round part must rotate in the hole in the handlebar...if it doesn't, then the cable flexes and the strands break. On the other side, the end of the cable must be able to slide side-to-side when you pull the lever...again, if not, then the cable breaks. I would try a fit up and if you get the rotating/sliding movement, then you should be good.
