compression reading

Post by richrd »

I just got my first beemr ('73 r60) unloaded and in the shop. I have lost count of how many bikes I have fixed, rebuilt, and restored, but this is my FIRST AIRHEAD.

So, question #1. What should the compression reading be? I get 240 on one side and 210 on the other. I would expect maybe 150 on a good motor.

#2. Is there a source for a shop manual download?

Thanks
Rich

Numbers over 200 are definitely not correct...that just can't be I don't think. But something around 150 for the R60/5 seems better...the R60/5 was a very tightly strung engine.

As for a manual, click on Knowledge Base above right and go the library. Search for documents for the R60/5. I suspect you'll find something worthwhile.

this means I have to figure out why a long reliable compression gauge suddenly starts lying to me.

Do you have access to another compression gage?

Test on another motorcycle of known value. If the gauge is consistently inaccurate at least there is value in the balance of pressure readings.

I checked a motor that should show 190 and got 210. My ducati single gave 180 and a honda 350 gave 150. So it seems about %10 high.

But that would still put the beemr at about 190. I'm going to go to town Monday and look for a different gauge.

On another track, who do you like to do business with for parts? I prefer to give my money to the ggod guys that know what they're selling.

Thanks

I would agree with Steve on EME but would add Motorworks and Meyers. Motorworks knows and stands behind their products and cannot often be beat on price, even with shipping. I usually have my orders within a week from the UK to BC Canada.

The Haynes manual says good compression is 145 psi or better. My R 60/7 shows 160 psi. 240 psi suggests a 15 or 16 to 1 compression ratio. That's a diesel

If you want a hard copy, E-bay has a couple of Haynes manuals listed - B 2-valve twins '70-''96.
