Plunger rear suspension unit disassembly

Post by richardjharding »

Hi All,

I'm trying to disassemble the rear suspension units from my 1954 R25/3 - I've managed after a bit of a struggle to remove the shaft from the units but I'm struggling to remove the black lower covers and spings - on at least one I need to replace the bushings for the shaft

I've got a copy of the 25/2 workshop manual and it states: "through drilled hole of spring covering tube catch spring by means of pin spanner Matra no 284 and turn spring off bearing plunger cast with the housing cover plate"

But I can't see a hole on either of the black lower tubes on mine - that tool I think should be 58/62 pin spanner - but that size looks wrong for that housing even if there were a hole

Is the 25/3 different from 25/2 in this area?

Any ideas?

Hammer and drift through the hole works too. But if there is no hole, there is no other way then to cut open the cover until you reach the end of the spring. Then with the drift against that end unwind the spring from the casting.

So I managed to find where the hole in the black cover was filled and was able to disassemble the non-drive side, the drive side but up much more of a fight, and ended up cutting both the cover and the spring to get it all apart.

What I did find is that as well as the bushings being very worn I'm missing one of the rubber bump stops - item 19 in this diagram - https://www.bmwclassicmotorcycles.com/p ... -r25-r253/

I'm struggling to find replacements - Does anyone one know where I can get them from? - I think the part number is 33 53 3 054 124

Vech,

Many thanks for the quick response - and the pointer to another parts supplier - that one hadn't turned up in my Google search!

Looking at the Haggett pages part 19 - the wave washer isn't listed for the R25/3 (but is for R25) is that a mistake on their site - Do you recommend installing it on my 25/3?

Thanks again
Richard
