Hi Neil.
Check to see if there is 12 volts at the big heavy red wire on the diode board. It is on the lower left as sitting on the bike. This come straight from the battery. Check this to anywhere on the engine case for the ground. I’m wondering if you arced a connector inside one of the main ground wire ends. This being the wire from the battery to the transmission. Also recheck the battery connections for clean and tight. You had two turns of the starter motor which makes me think your short pulled alot of amp through an old crimp terminal.

hey richard, thanks for checking this out. i'm embarrassed to admit that the fault was all my own. i transposed the black solenoid and red headlight bucket leads on the relay when switching out the old relay. oh well...
