That's a good question Rich. The tyre came with the bike and I didn't think to query that. It seems to be the issue.
This tyre is 110x90x18.
I just looked up conversion ratios and I see that 110x90 replaces 4" to 4 3/4". (http://www.webbikeworld.com/Motorcycle- ... e-data.htm). So yes, 3/4" would make all the difference.
The correct size probably should be 100/90x18 in the new terminology.
