ABSOLUTELY set normal idle to 1,000 to 1,100 RPM!

I believe you because this is where my gen light goes out. Is this why you say to set it at this RPM?

Frankly I have never set my idle above 1000. The fellow who is insistent about it read in Snowbum the BMW expert writings that setting the idle below 1000 or can cause issues with timing chain oiling.

I am not going to argue with him.

In my case, the low RPM idle was always set by my original dealer/mechanic when my bike was new in 84. That is what I was taught by him and his subsequent mechanics.

I don't make a point of idling for long periods of time. Perhaps that is why it has never bit me? St.

I can see the logic in both and the reasons for each personal preference. I never idle a 4-stroke motorcycle very long, even if it has a radiator. Even my 1st motorcycle, a 72 kawi 750 triple 2-stroke, I rode that thing for a whole winter in the midwest because the tranny went out on my Chevy stationwagon. I'd start it, put on my 2-finger ski mittens and helmet, mount up and ride away within 2 minutes.
