For those who like special tools

Post by malmac »

One of the thinks I take an interest in in making special tools for any given job. Are these tools and jigs essential, well I guess mostly they are not. However it is fun working out how to either assemble, disassemble or accurately measure the old engines. Here are some recent additions to my special tool shelf.

First up is a jig I use to mount the old heads in the milling machine and remove the top of the valve guides before heating the heads to remove old valve guides.

Then I machine off the top portion to remove the clip.

Not necessary, but it makes the process nice and controlled.

Enjoy.

The second special tool is a fixture for measuring big end play.

The post for mounting the crank, uses precise sleeves at 35mm, 32mm and 36mm to give flexibility in holding cranks either assembled or partially disassembled or fully disassembled.
The dial gauge measures in 1 micron intervals.

The third tool is for removing the rear crank bearing carrier from the crankcase.
This first victim had the carrier almost welded in with some sort of sealant. It took a good deal of heat and persuasion to remove it with out any damage.

It took sometime to make the tool but it works very well and makes a potentially ham fisted operation quite clinical.

The fourth tool is for removing little end bushes and pushing in new ones.

I hope it makes sense. It works well.

There is a separate piece not shown for pressing in the new bush.

All these tools have been made quite recently and are new to the workshop.
I hope you all enjoy working on your machines as much as I do.

Cheers for now.

Very cool !!! That is a great thing, to be able to make a tool, and the assurance that you WILL get the job done! I wish you were my neighbor, so I could come over and borrow those nice tools you have made.

Thomas

Now that sounds like a great holiday destination..... However I thought you had had some really bad bush fires... Lets hope that is sorted and everyone is safe.

We have a little experience in Australia of bushfires.... a regular summer threat.

Yes Mal, we had a horrendous fire in the town I grew up in , Lahaina, Maui. It is tragic and devastating. Global warming is affecting all of us!

Mal, I see you made a tool to replace the small end bushing. How do you ream it to size? Did you also make a tool to keep it perpendicular to the crankcase?
