Did you test the coils? Use a multimeter to measure the resistance from one spark plug cap to the other cap. Should be 20-22K ohms.

To get a good compression test, the engine should be warmish and the carbs ideally should be off the heads, or at least prop the carb slides open to all the air to easily get to the engine.

The coils aren’t to old but could you explain why the coils would be the issue even if your getting a spark

There is spark, and then there is SPARK. I won't say the coils are bad but one or both may be failing due to age and a number of reasons.

I just was reading Snowbum's write up on them and the reasons they fail. I would post a link but I have had problems with that in this forum, you will have to look it up.

Hey as you say, it is a 53 year old bike age takes its toll on many things.

Kurt gives the test for them, Snowbum does as well. While I find Snowbum,s write ups a bit wordy, they are priceless reading for airhead owners. Only Oak who used to write in the Airheads club, was as good. St.

Just to add, it might be worth checking Snowbum's writings to see if he has any advice on the Dyna III systems and troubleshooting them. St.

So finally was able to get a test on the coils I’m getting around 36 ohms. Does that mean there bad?

Hmmm...can you tell us more about what you did? What was the setting on the meter? Something sounds weird...

You may need to test each individual component and then add the numbers up.

The coils could test in spec and be bad. I had this issue new coils fixed the problem. Be sure to get the correct coils. Also, do not use resistor spark plugs with the points ignition.

I did what you mentioned. Test from cap to cap on ohms it was late after a long day so I’ll try again and make sure I’m doing it correctly

You may want to remove the plug wires where they push into the towers on the coils. Sometime corrosion can build up inside there, creating problems.
