1965 R60/2 Overhaul
Re: 1965 R60/2 Overhaul
Top end parts laid out for cleaning on Monday.
The driveshaft, swingarm, fender, wheel installed.
The motor went together well. Everything moves nice and smooth. Ready for the front cover when the breather plate gets fixed.
I got the flywheel runout set to within .0035 and the clutch installed.
Re: 1965 R60/2 Overhaul
I cleaned the top end, hand lapped the valves, and picked up the breather plate from the welder yesterday.
I didn't expect the cylinders and pistons to be in spec, so the original plan was to put the top end back as it was and redo it later. Since it measured so well I am putting on new rings, honing the cylinder, and running it.
Today the pistons are getting cleaned, the valves are getting installed, along with the timing cover and electrics. I should be able to put the top end on this weekend.
Here is a question, the measurements for the rocker supports are between 87.95 and 88.25. I ordered a few shims to bring them up to height (88.3-88.5mm). I was able to set the valve lash and had no problems with the sunken rocker supports. I am wondering how far out of whack my supports are. Has anyone shimmed there rockers? What measurements did you come up with?

I took the flange off the transmission as well. It was on there tight. Kind of scary. I temporarily put the trans in to do the initial break in runs. It is coming out for a rebuild sometime soon.

Re: 1965 R60/2 Overhaul
Here is a video of it running. No smoke or weird noises. The thing was pretty well jetted to begin with. With a little carb synching its good enough until the spring. The timing is a little advanced but I will knock it back tomorrow.
I have to sign off for about a month or so until I do the trans. I will post some pictures of the trans rebuild too.

I noticed it still has one of the original coils. With the issue they have are you worried about it at all?

Re: 1965 R60/2 Overhaul
I wouldn't worry about your valves popping their heads off!!! While you may occasionally see a catastrophic top end failure on a /2, they FAR AND FEW BETWEEN unless other things are not paid attention to. To plant a seed that says otherwise is just plain WRONG! An R60 engine is about as under stressed as an engine can be. In my experience, a new valve is just as likely to break (perhaps even MORE likely to break) than a used one that is still in good shape. Back in the day if a bike needed a "valve job" and the guides were still good, it was normal practice to just reface used valves as long as the edges where still "thick enough", recut the valve seats, and lap the valves/seats and reassemble. Have done many hundreds of heads that way with many hundreds of thousands of miles on them since with NO issues over the years. Today, the mentality is to just throw new parts at everything. Often, a good used part may be a better solution given you typically have no idea about the specs the new part was made to. Sorry for the rant, but rumors of heads breaking off /2 valves as a normal occurrence just need to be stopped in their tracks!

Re: 1965 R60/2 Overhaul Rocker tower specification
Many times, during my active work @ Bench Mark Works, I shimmed out rocker arms by placing a shim washer under the rocker block, with no ill effects.
