Centering Bushing?

Post by Cliff »

I was looking at rebuild parts for my Bing carburators and noticed that the diagram shows a spacer inside the motor side of carburetor called a centering Bushing. I've been riding the the bike, a 69 R50US for 9 years without this part installed and wondered if I needed to put them in.

Probably not a big deal, but a cheap part nonetheless. I probably wouldn't make a special order to get them, but next time you order parts why not replace then. There is a step cut into the carb to accomodate the bushing. It's a ring with a split in it if I recall correctly.

The R50US, with 24mm carburetors, does not use that bushing.

It is only used on the models R68, R69, R69S, R50S and R69US that have 26mm carburetors.

I think their purpose is center the carb onto the input flange as well as help seal the airflow through the carb into the head. Without the "bushing", what is sealing is just the fiber washer that isolates the carb from the head.

Slight correction, the first 300 or so R68s did not have this centering bushing. Little known fact.

That is an addendum, not a correction. The R68 model does use this part, and as previously written the listed models are those which use the part.
