Trying to determine special Bitsa R51/3 value

Post by stephen »

I am interested in buying a beautiful R51/3 Bitsa and trying to determine its value. It was built from different leftover parts from several restorations of r51/2, R51/3, and r68. It is restored to a very high quality and is a rider which is what I want. Any help on placing a value on this bike would be appreciated.

The same seller has two other bikes I am considering. One is a restored R68 with a R69 engine and the other is a restored R51/2 triple matching bike. All of them restored to high standards. Would like to know your thoughts on values of these also. He is asking the same price for all three bikes.

I would have thought the non matching numbers bike would be worth less money. Help me understand this!

There's never anything interesting like this on fleabay or ibmwr, so how do you get a seat at the big boy table?

Due to the condition, and rarity of bikes/parts. The R68 is def worth atleast 25-30k even without he matching engine. The other bikes are nice and if they are mechanically perfect and look as good in person as those pictures,I would say that 17-20K is not out of this world for the R51/3,but the R51/2 is definitely 25-30K if it is mechanically and cosmetically A or A+. The cost of restoration and repair makes it worthwhile sometimes to pay a little more for the right bike and enjoy it sooner.

values

AS it is always said the value is what ever someone is willing to pay at a particular time and place
JMHO
The R51/3 15-20K
R51/2 18-22
The R68 now thats a tough one with out matching numbers and not even a R68 engine ,but R69 it is still a rare frame i guess , but what do you really have ? If you can't find the matching motor or at least a 68 motor i don't know how you could justify paying 25-30k for it to me it is no more than an R69s

They made so many of the R51/3 that their value is not that high i realize you can have 20k in a fully restored R51/3 ,but who ever gets out what they put into such a high production number bike .
To me the R51/2 is the one i would be most interested in personally
the R68 is same frame just different motor .
Now with all of that said the only one i would really buy for collection would be the R51/2, the /3 is a guess a non numbers matching bike nicely done ,but really no collector value that would command over 10K , the R68 is a bit of a mystery , but there again not really collectible as is.

Now this is my opinion and it's worth exactly what you paid for it.

So why are you buying a bike or two?

Post by malmac »

I think if you are a collector and you see each bike as an investment - then others here have given you better advice than I could come up with.

However if you just want a bike to ride and live with, and fair enough don't want to pay more than it is probably generally thought to be worth - then the whole matching number thing is rather unimportant. If you ride the bike and really like it and you can find a price that suits you and the seller - then great.

Why marry a woman you don't much care for just because she has low milage and matching numbers?
