Screws for the Badges

Post by lorenzo.imbesi »

Dear All,
I have a R75/5 SWB Year 1972 with the toaster tank and I was wondering what style are the original screws going on the badges of the tank and the rear of the seat..
are they Philips or Slot Drive type?
Thanks for helping..

Ian Falloon's book shows a picture of a '71 tanks with slotted screws. Vech shows the following on his website:

07 11 9 901 703--screw emblem /5 4x.7x12 ss

Don't try and get the slots to align up as this may put too much pressure on the badge and thus damaging it.

Ian's book seems to show Phillips screw heads in the one picture. However, BMW Hucky's page:

http://www.bmwhucky.com/007552.html

seems to suggest slotted screws. But Hucky's page is not necessarily stock/original.

Not sure if Ian's book is "must have". There are a few out there. Ian's book does have some nice pictures. Go to Amazon and search the books for Falloon BMW. I have the two that are generally about Boxer Twins. The 2003 book is more detailed than the 2004 book.

Then there is the Andy Schwietzer book titled "BMW Motor Cycle from 1969 to 1985: Boxer from /5 - Volume 1 All Airheads with Twin Shocks". Not as many close up shots, but still quite good. I don't see it on Amazon, though.

BMW very rarely uses slotted screws for any fasteners, must be an assembly line issue? St.

Yet both Meyers and Motorworks sells slotted screws for the tank emblem. All of my /5s have, and came with, slotted.

Yes, BMW did use slotted screws on the tank emblems, perhaps the reason being they were installed by hand very carefully rather than using a jig or fast assembly tool?

I can well imagine hand installation of the badges after a tank has been painted and pinstriped being done by a careful skilled pair of hands.

Then again, I could be full of it, lol, St.
