The system is 12 volts but I'm still not happy with the headlight

Post by Micha »

I have a new reflector in my head lamp, a clean lens and the 12v PowerDynamo system installed, and bought some 12v bulbs from Salis. These are direct drop-in items which is very comfy, but I am still not pleased with the headlight performance, considering the fact that it's 12 volts.
Is there an after market 12v Halogen bulb that can fit our original bulb socket? Is any kind of adapter needed?
Is there maybe an other solution to ride with halogen?

Is halogen the solution?

So the headlamp is the original from the 6v system?

I checked Vech's old site to see what he offered. Certainly there is the 6V headlamp but it is only 35Watts. He shows a 12V headlamp for '55-69 bikes rated at 60Watts. Also a 12V Halogen bulb. Whether something like that would be suitable for the R51/3, I'm not sure.

The Salis website shows a 6V and 12V bulb although at the same wattage. Note this wattage may be related to input power not necessarily how bright the bulb is. But certainly, you should get a 12V bulb to start with. Probably cheaper to do that than invest in more stuff for halogen...if it's even possible.

Vech does show this which might be interesting:

-- headlight halogen conversion assembly H4 12v with bulb fits 1951-1969 twins & /5

A little pricey though!

Yes, get the right 12volt headlight bulb. It will be much brighter.

Thanks guys.
I have the 12v bulb from Salis, but I am still not very pleased. OK - I gave up the halogen; What parameters should I look for, when searching for such a bulb at the local shop/web?
For higher light output?
Thanks again, pleasent weekend all.

I have the 12V and H4 conversions on my R69S. My experience with LED replacements for halogen bulbs has not been good. Instead, I bought the Cyclops H4 LED Headlight Conversion Kit for about eighty dollars. It is VERY bright. Try this link: https://www.cyclopsadventuresports.com/ ... bulbs.html

Thanks Jon.
Aren't these also LED items?
I don't have Halogen at the moment, I got a regular 12v bilux bulb.
What is the difference between such a conversion Kit and a "plug & play" LED bulb?
I'm afraid I won't have enough room inside the headlamp for such a kit, only for a bulb alone.
Thanks again for any input.

I have a 6V LED bulb for my 69S from Bob's and it scatters light all over the place using the stock reflector and lens.

Don't LED bulbs require reflectors and lens created specifically for LEDs?
