1981 RT 100 OIL COOLER QUESTION

Post by jerseyjeff61 »

Hello All,
The oil cooler on my airhead doesn't seem to even warm up, let alone get hot.Is there a thermostat on the cooler? Or a bypass valve? Hmmm.
Seems odd it doesn't heat up?.
My 2002 Bonneville's oil cooler heats up to engine temps every ride. Just wondering if there is a problem with the RT 100?

I've never been around one of these. Check out Snowbum's site for some background. HTH.

Great Link.

I have the thermostat type on my bike. This unit allows only some of the oil to flow through for cooling.
This explains why the oil cooler doesn't heat up .
Thanks

After many, many miles on my 82 R100RT including time in Arizona, Mexico, Southern California I have never felt it get even warm. I swear you must have to boil the oil to get the oil circulating

Oh no, wifes coming home- get the engine out of the oven!
"Are those bearings in the freezer?!" she calmly inquired

RS & RT oil cooler operation

Post by c.d.iesel »

I would suspect you have a stuck -open- thermostat?

Here in Connecticut, my 1981 R100 RS always made the oil cooler so hot
you would nearly burn your finger touching it - during summer riding.
So hot to ride that one would remove the fairing lowers during hot season
riding

There is a special tool for screwing into the housing to lift the
thermostat valve for draining. Possible your unit it stuck open so the motor never
reaches optimum operation temps ?

you want to be damn sure to use the correct oil filter, and correct
order of gasket, seal ring, washer or damage to yer motor will rezult!
