Starts runs fine until warmed up.

Post by jberzins »

Weird thing has happened the last couple of times I took my 66 R60/2 out. Starts fine, I stop somewhere after a couple miles and run in a store come out and one kick starts right up. I go another couple miles stop in another place, starts first kick. Start riding it home and it starts to cough a little, like it is out of gas. Get it home shut it off. Now it won't start. Once it cools down, it starts perfectly. Any ideas would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

The last scenario of not

Post by schrader7032 »

The last scenario of not wanting to start when hot but does easily when cold points toward a failing coil. The first few times you only went a couple of miles, so probably not enough to really warm things up. Is it the original coil?

Gas tank/cap vent? Petcock or fuel line crud? Check fuel flow at the carbs to rule it out...

Bad ignition condenser, or possibly bad coil.

I don't think it is a carb/fuel issue. It is the original coil, I have a few extras so I will switch it out and see if that helps. Is there anything special I need to worry about when switching it out. Thanks again folks.

I think your problem...

Post by R68 »

...is a old coil that's shorting out when hot, but have some fun: go for a ride the front engine cover removed (not in the rain!!!). If your bike starts after warmed up, it's because your coil was kept cool with the cover off!...

Coil is very easy to replace.

Coil is very easy to replace. Just make sure the coil has ~10mm clearance between the "safety" points in the case.

I agree. You describe a typical bad coil.
