R50/2 Cylinder Head Exhaust Manifold threads

Post by Carl R50 »

Hi Guys
I have recently purchase a 1969 R50/2 and is busy with a complete Frame up Restoration. I have removed the Engine and have realized the Threads to the Exhaust are almost completely striped away.
Do you guys know it the Threads and be repaired or will I have to prepare myself for a new set of Head.
Do note I stay in South Africa and we don’t have access to all the specialist you guys have over there in the States and Europe.

Thanks

Thread Fix

Post by schrader7032 »

Carl -

Yes they can be fixed. I've read about three solutions: cut off the entire spigot and TIG weld on a new threaded stub; machine off the threads and then shrinking/pinning on a threaded sleeve; or TIG welding the damaged area to build up new material and then cut new threads. I think the latter is the best approach and the sleeve is probably not so good.

Here's another possibility...not sure what kind of sizes it comes in and if it would work on an R50/2 head.

You can get someone to Tig

You can get someone to Tig weld some aluminum on there and build it back up,than buy a die from "S.Meyer",they sell a cutting die for the exhaust stub.

exhaust flange gone - repair source

Post by c.d.iesel »

the folks at BOB'S BMW in Maryland provide an excellent exhaust
spigot repair - contact their service dept. The heads
will look like new when they return.
And use only new exhaust rings of course.
