There is obviously a too little number as well as a too much number. If the fluid volume is too little, then the gears won't be running in the oil bath and flinging it around the inside of the transmission. If the volume is too much, then the air volume is down and when the oil heats up and expands, then there's an increase in internal pressure.

So somewhere between is the right number. I agree that 300 ml sounds too little. Go with the 1 qt and see where the fluid level ends up.
