Carburetor slide worn from idle screw

Post by Worleybird89 »

I got the carburetor rebuild kit from Bing to replace all the jets and needles on the R60/2. As I was swapping out the main jet needles, I noticed significant wear in the end of the slider piston from the idle adjust screw. I'm sure this is normal since the screw is much harder metal, but it's almost too the point of wearing through (11 o'clock in the pic below). Should I swap the left and right sides so three screw rests on the opposite side? They both seem to fit perfectly this way. Am I overlooking any potential problems this might create?

I hadn't thought about swapping. You could try something like JBWeld to fill the hole in a bit? It might be hard enough to last for a good while.

Swapping will absolutely work brilliantly, however if they rattle at idle and are severely worn, then a new set may be in order. I usually check the jet needles and if they have lots of scuffing then I know the slides are loose .

Swapping them did work. No rattle. And FINALLY, the new jets and needles resolved the issue where best idle was with the mixture screws all the way in! So even though I had cleaned the old idle jets twice, and thought they were good, there was a clear different in the amount of light I could seen through the new ones. I was able to dial in the mixture on both sides, and with the STE synchrometers attached, I adjusted throttle cables and idle stop screws so both carbs are pulling the same volume at idle and through mid range to full throttle. Thanks to all the great new and old advice that came from this forum, both my bikes are running better than ever!

TERRIFIC!!! I love it when all the hard work and time has become a positive result. When these bikes are running spot on, they are brilliant! ENJOY!!
