/2 Final drive

Post by Ziggy »

Bike was leaking oil. Removed final drive and found crown gear bearing had failed (likely original/56k on odometer) Following Barrington book, replaced all the seals, checked backlash and contact wear pattern and measured for crown gear bearing shim. Re-assembled, heating cover housing, including hitting on 2X4 to seat new bearing. Pinion spun freely. The case cooled and the pinion still turns but with some resistance. I can turn it with a socket easily, but not as easily when everything was hot.

As it stands, there is no crown gear shim. The smallest shim available (.18) made it a too tight fit.

Is this an acceptable result?

Try giving both spline and drive shaft pinion a slight dab with a plastic mallet and see if that “settles” the bearings. I have had stuff that when together and slightly bound, and a tap of a plastic mallet cleared up the binding. It won’t hurt to try .
