final drive / drive shaft

Post by richrd »

Motors, and running gear I can work on. But I've never touched the beemer final drive.

I am bringing a r60/5 back from the dead to be a cosmetically original rider. (But some of what you don't see may be a hybrid of what ever I have lying on the shelf. don't look too close) She started for the first time yesterday. And now that I've heard it run I'm going to order tires and start the paint.

But what should I do about the final? Tear it all down and inspect? Or ride it until something breaks or makes noise?

thanks

The final drive would need to be properly shimmed if you take it apart. I'd just leave as is and see how it performs. Be sure to clean and lube the wheel splines.

I would change fluids and ride as it is. No reason to take it all apart, IMHO.

If the drive splines are good, it isn't leaking and you haven't found metal in the drained gear oil. Ride it. St.
