side cover color on /5

Post by jberzins »

Hello,
I recently acquired a Monza Blue /5, it will need repaint. I ordered new chrome side covers. The bike I had 30 years ago had black stripes on the chrome side covers, they seemed original to me. However, I have seen some that are painted the same Monza blue. Does anyone know how they came out of the factory? The black seems to match the tank chrome better, IMO. However, I wanted to ask.

Where did you get new chrome side covers? I've only found stainless steel.

All /5 toaster tank era sidecovers had black stripes EXCEPT for the Blue bikes, which had blue stripes. The driveshaft side covers were often lost when the rubber band holding them on the bike broke, so I would expect that it was very easy to get a cheap used set off another bike, and most likely those would have black stripes. So it was an easy decision - I’m sure - two just swap out both and maintain a matching set.

Found an old picture of my /5 in blue from 30 plus years ago.
Stripes were black on it.
