clutch advice

Post by DIS295 »

64 R69S mileage: I'd guess around 30K

Clutch slipped going up a long hill in 4th at perhaps 4k rpm. Backed off, was fine the rest of the day.

It's now apart. Clutch was 9MM, now 8.4mm. Light tan, glints of brass, brown areas, all shiny. Other surfaces fine.

Am planning to replace the clutch. I see that there's a STARK clutch available. Any others I should consider?

When I go to maxbmw, that's what they list -no oem apparently., unless STARK was an OEM supplier?? Cap Cycle doesn't mention the source of theirs. I'm new to the bmw bike parts world, so not sure where else to go. For other brands, some aftermarket are much better, some worse.

Has your experience been good with the clutches that Salis supplies? Is everything they sell OEM?

I haven't had any experience with Salis...yet...but others have spoken good things about them. Check around the forum.

Do you have any oil on the “shelf” below the transmission? These clutches are way over engineered and surprised to hear it slips without oil contamination on the friction disc. Anyhoo….. Mark+Swiss makes a high quality disc and Salis sells those or you can get it direct from www.bmwbike.com
If everything else checks out, this should cure your problems.🤙🏽

808 Thanks for the info and advice, the mark+swiss is the same clutch that MAX has, even though they use Stark in the description. Also thanks for link to BMWBIKE. If you've ordered from him, what's typical delivery time?

I have gotten parts from him,but usually order through SALIS or vintagebeemerparts.com now. Salis has unfortunately had to charge super high shipping prices,so unless you are ordering a lot of parts,it may or may not be worthwhile. Go on their site and see. Also watch the FB groups,I just got a NOS SACHS new production BMW R69S clutch disc for $125.00 it was made in the 80's (?) I dont think they make them any more.

Just rec'd the new clutch from Max. The free shipping and two day turnaround made it for me. Looks very well made with larger than original rivets and a dark lining with embedded brass metallic bits. Looks just like the pics of mark+swiss clutch.
