R90S master cylinder. Painted?

I’ve just received my master cylinder back from Apple Hydraulics after a resleeve. It looks pretty naked. I’m wondering if the master cylinder was originally painted? This is a 1976 R90s.

Here's pictures by Brook Reams on a /6 master cylinder rebuild. It doesn't look like raw metal, but it doesn't look fancy painted either. In the end,

However, a little farther down he mentions that there was some rust and the "paint" was chipping. He ended up repainting it:
