Best handlebars for BMW
My 1965 R69s came with originally with the US high bars, very rusty now. I bought what was supposed to be german made high bars, the chrome was terrible. I doubt if it was copper, nickel chrome although the originals most likely were not. I bent the chrome plated stainless steel risers I bought to get over the 22mm US high bars. I did it little at a time but still got a small amount of buckling of the chrome, not happy with the result.
These bars being sold are all around $69 to $85 how can they do a good chrome job for that amount, especially if they are European made. I did see a set of low bars from Max BMW for $190, (part number: 32710015917) which have the Hella notches and exit hole for wire, sourced by BMW made in Germany. There is also part number 32712072129 for $117, it too has the notches and hole for Hellas. They say they are not sourced from BMW, but made in Germany.
I am not sure I want to repeat trying to bend the risers to get over the bars, even though with the low bars they will still need to be spread a bit to go over the two radiuses. So what has everyone done, re-chromed their originals and bend the original risers twice more? Or is there a good set of bars out there somewhere. I have bought numerous items twice trying to restore this bike, I do not think the chrome on any of these bars are going to meet my expectations, so considering buying a set of bars and just have them re-chromed with the copper/nickel/chrome process.
I need some input to make an intelligent decision, this time.
