R60/2 ignition advancer unit problems

Post by salilla »

I'm restoring a 1961 R60/2 and have come across a weird issue with the advance unit. I have fully rebuilt the engine, and when I get it fired up, it runs quite okay. HOWEVER, it is extremely difficult to start and to get running well. I have experience with old Guzzi ignition systems, and I know that BMWs shouldn't be as difficult to set up correctly.

My greatest issue is that the advance unit's small sheet metal locking plates are rubbing against the contact points, as seen in the picture below. I discovered this just by accident when looking at the advancer unit while the engine was running.

I have new points which I think are Noris brand. I have read that Bosch points are a bit narrower, but I can't seem to find them anywhere for sale. I live in Finland, so ordering parts from the US is quite expensive.

Is there anywhere I can find the locking plates? Salis Parts is a good supplier in The Netherlands, but the plates are no longer available.

Best regards,
Iivari
