twist grip not right

Post by richrd »

I have been trying to get the throttle cables on. I've seen the pics of how the twist grip pieces are to aligned, but,,,,,

No matter how I do it, the action is very stiff and I only get about %75 opening of the carbs. It's not in the cables, but I've tried everything I can see, what am I missing?

Its hard to know what you're missing without knowing what you're not missing. If you read this article you'll probably figure it out. https://w6rec.com/bmw-motorcycle-contro ... placement/

if I just hook up one cable, I get full movement. but with both cables it rough, and extremely hard to turn.

I can work both cables with pliers and get smooth pulls.

The only thing I can figure out is wear in the teeth somewhere???

Well, if nothing is binding and everything is assembled correctly (a lot of ifs) then maybe the throttle assembly is worn out. Have you removed the twist grip and cam for inspection? Good pictures of what they should look like can be seen here: https://vintagebeemerparts.com/ and in Duane's article.

You don't say what model bike, slide or CV carbs. If slide, can you move the slides all the way to the top with your finger without binding, or if CV the butterfly? There are only a few p!aces for things to hang up.

I have a brass chain wheel, EME shows this as being for a /2.

Maybe this is causing the binding?

What bike?

There are at least 4 different types of throttle cams for 1970-95 Airheads.

I think he has a '73 r60/5 per his other post regarding the headlight bucket re-wire.

The EME site shows the backside of the “/2” and the 70-74 throttle chain. The backside is what matters, some have quite a “cam” and the chain lengths are different. Compare the back of yours to those pictures and see which one you have.

Did the bike come this way or did you get new parts?

I do find it a pain to get both throttle cables in and the “timing mark” of the cam and twist grip to get lined up. It can be tedious. Takes a few tries.
