79 Points in a can system rebuild

Post by srankin »

Anyone out there ever rebuild or do anything with the advance system on a 79 bike with the points in a can? If so, and you replaced weights or springs, where did you source them from?

I am looking at a possible sticking of the weights and may have to replace, don't want to pay for a whole new can if it can be helped. St.

I would check moving parts for wear and replace springs only BMW is an option. I would order from MAX they are most likely in stock.

The thing is, BMW' repair manual says replace when anything else but the points need refreshed. There is not listing for internal parts for the can, just the whole can itself for $600.

Before I spend that, I would like to try to get to the weights and such to check for wear and lube. But they are internal in the can, not easy to access like the older bikes. St.

I have a note that an Airhead member offered up a bean can overhaul in the October 2017 edition of Airmail. So if you have access to back issues, it might offer some ideas. Not sure if the "bean" can is the same as the "points-in-the-can".

Can't say as I've seen any videos but there's always Chris Harris, MotoPhoenix, or Boxer2Valve.

Kurt, I bet the cans are pretty darned close the only difference being points versus the Hall effect unit. LOL, I just don't understand why BMW decided to make this system for two years? I guess they had a lot of points on hand to get rid of or didn't have the Hall effect units. Only they know and this one of BMW' dumber things as far as I am concerned. St.

Steve, there's a post on this link https://www.bmwlt.com/threads/78-r100-7 ... 05&slide=1 of the parts from a tear down of the points bean can.

Thank you for the link, that is more than what I had before. Still I wonder if parts can be swapped or sourced? Looks like most likely not. Rather complex set up for points system, lol. St.

Steve,

There was a post on a points beancan rebuild here as well.

I tried to disassemble mine to service the advance but chickened out when the force needed to get it apart exceeded my comfort zone.

Did you see much wear at the pivot pins on the advance mechanism? St.
