Turn signal intermittent

Post by "DAVID LEMAIRE" »

I have a 1976 R90/6 and the right rear turn signal is intermittent.

The front right turn signal works fine. The flasher on the instrument cluster does not flash. A few times the right rear has started flashing intermittently and when it does, the flasher on a instrument cluster also flashes.

Is it possible the flasher relay could be bad or does that work for left and right side?

All the wiring and connectors seem to be fine. and nothing wrong with the bulb.

When it comes to electrical issues the first thing to do is to clean the terminals using electrical contact cleaner.

I had 2 problems on a K1100RS, horn on switch cluster and turn indicator switch in a different cluster. I removed the switches from the handlebars, turn them over and sprayed them with contact cleaner. The clear spray dribbled out was the colour of ink. No more problems.

I had a similar problem on my ‘74 R90/s, turn signals worked then intermittently stopped flashing, including dash light. Replaced flasher unit and problem persisted, then replaced instrument light cluster with Kat-dash unit and problem solved, plus much better/visible instrument lights.

My assumption is that you should see the same behavior and front and rear
flasher if it is related to the relay. However a relay can become sick and
sometimes repaired. The attached picture shows a relay from my wifes R90S,
where the flashing was erratic, sometimes no flashing and other times work
as intended.

The problem was in the soldering on the printcard. In direct translation
from Danish - it was a "cold soldering". A good warm resoldering of the
point fixed the issue :-)

Maybe this is too simple. But if the right rear bulb doesn't draw current for any reason, perhaps the draw through the flasher is too weak to cycle the flasher. I would start from the bulb and work forward until you have current. My experience with old cars is bad bulb and/or socket contacts is low-hanging fruit.

I don’t think that’s the issue because the front flasher is flashing, but not the rear. I also swapped bulbs on both sides and I know the bulb is good.

Guess I need to remove the tank and do some more wire checks again.

The /6 turn signals (aka trafficators, etc etc) are, stock, wired for parallel-connected right side (front and rear) lamps; and, the same for the left side. When the turn signal switch is activated, the electricity comes from terminal 49a of the flasher unit to the turn signal switch, and then to both lamps on the side of the bike, as selected. Thus, if one side, front, is flashing, and not the rear, then the rear lamp is bad, or, the wiring or socket is bad. A test lamp or voltmeter will tell the story.
NOTE that the indicator lamp is not connected to the left or right lamps circuit, but has to a separate circuit inside the flasher unit. Note, additionally, that, assuming the lamps are all making proper contact and wiring intact, that a bad front or rear lamp results in the indicator lamp flashing once, and then it stays un-lit….this is to tell you a lamp or connection to a lamp, has failed.
If the flasher unit is not the stock unit, then you may have a bit more fun and games to figure out.

I suspect your right rear turn signal fixture or the ground circuit is corroded.

If the flasher relay is going bad, it can cause one side or the other to stop flashing or become intermittent.
