R12 rear axle reinstallation

Post by Matteo »

I recently got a R12 that is pretty decent shape but needs a few items to be addressed. As part of evaluting the truness of the frame, I removed the rear wheel. I unscrewed the axle, left handed, but I'm having a hard time getting the axle screwed back in, even without the wheel installed. I think this is mostly due to the fact that the threads are buggered up on the first 1/3 of the threaded part. It looks like only the first 1/3 engages given how far the axle goes in before the threads start to engage.

Here is my question. What does the axle screw into? I'm guessing it is the final drive cover. I am trying to take that cover off but it looks to take more than a few gentle blows to get it off since it ain't moving. Do I need to apply heat?

Thanks in advance.

Matteo, the cover will need heat, about 80 deg C should do it , Mapp gas or similar works well. Also there is a steel insert in the cover which the axel screws into. It is replaceable cheers Peter
