Headlight screw

Post by Hugh003 »

On my '76 R75/6 there is a screw holding the headlight on, underneath the headlight shell. It is a Philips sheet metal screw with a ring around it. Seems pretty hokey. I wondered if this is correct. Thanks.

Can't find it in the fiche, but my /7 has a screw there...not sheet metal but a machine screw.

No screw on mine

Post by MikeL46 »

Neither my 76 R90S nor my 78 R100RS has a screw, just a spring clip inside the trim ring. In any case, you could not access a screw with either fairing in place.

I thought all /6 and /7 headlights used the spring clip. Later models did have a retaining screw, but I don't know when it was added.

OK, I misread that...I thought the question was about the chrome ring and not abpit holding the headlight in. I probably forgot how mine was originally as it came with the Luftmeister fairing. But the chrome ring just transferred to the fairing front, so I suspect it's the same. I just had to replace my H4 bulb on the /7. I removed the screw holding the trim ring on and the headlight just "fell" out into my hands. I removed the 3-prong plug at the back and replaced the bulb. The chrome ring did hang on some tabs at the top of the headlight shell.

IIRC earlier (or different models) had those snap rings which held the headlight to the inside of the chrome ring, which was then held to the headlight shell. Also I seem to remember that the early models had issues with bumps in the road causing the whole thing to come undone...there was a way of jury-rigging the bottom (at 6 o'clock) fastener with a black zip tie to make it secure.
