The top end on that engine if bored out, according to my mechanic, would leave "a stack of washers."
The engine with the trashed piston was in the bike. I'm not sure what happened to it. The bike was stored for 20 years or so and ran OK when it entered storage. At least I have one engine that can be rebuilt.

I asked Ron to take a look at the transmission because it didn't seem to be shifting correctly.
He had a hard time getting the transmission cover off. The bearings were corroded above the oil level, apparently from sitting for so long. He also found a broken clutch push rod.
He said the gears had a small amount of pitting, but should be fine for this bike.
Here's a shot of the bike on the lift, partially dismantled.
Last Friday, parts started traveling; crank to the rebuilder, paintable parts to the painter. Cast parts sent out for soda blasting, certain chrome parts to the chrome shop and wheels out to be straightened to be rebuilt with new spokes.
I didn't stop in to visit last week-end, but I plan to stop by to see how things are going later this week.

A fAVOR TO ASK while the bike is apart on the bench?
is looking for a GOOD well exposed photo
up under your steering head - the frame area showing
the metal tab pointing down for the coil and horn mounting-
see his thread for the discussion - while your
tank is off and the motor out of the way -
you may provide a much needed answer -
Thanks, c.d.

The idea was to take down the engine in the bike
And rebuild using the matching numbers case. It turned out the crank has spun in the case, causing significant damage that my mechanic said couldn't be repaired. Sorry no pics, I'll take some later.
When he took down the engine in the bike, this is what he found:
The connecting rod bearings are worn
Valve seats worn:
Valve guides worn:
More later. . .
