R50/2 tires

Post by schrader7032 »

Samuel -

I run the same IRC tires on my R69S, but I have a 4.00x18 on the rear due to the different final drive. Before I changed to the 4.00 rear, I did run a 3.5 in the rear as well as the same tire as a front. If the tire is designed as a rear tire, you'll need to reverse the direction. This is done to ensure that the forces induced into the tire are compatible with the way the tire is made. This principally deals with the overlap in the layers that make up the tire carcass. The front tires are loaded primarily due to brake forces while the rear tire is loaded through the acceleration forces. Thus, the tire needs to be reversed.

Kurt,

thanks, that is what I thought, but I just wanted to bounce it off the "guys" first.

Thanks,

Samuel

R50/2 tires

1957 R-50: So...I just put a 3.50x18 IRC on the front to match the existing rear 3.50x18 IRC, (size based on the original owner's manual). If I understand correctly, I must reverse the drive direction of the arrow on the front tire(?).

Thanks,,,

Fred, that is what I have read about before. if the tire that is on the front of your bike is designed to be a rear tire, then you must reverse the direction of the arrow to deal with the braking force.

Hello

I was just looking at the IRc sight and the GS 11's have a 3.5/18 listed as a rear tire, in the archives I read where a front tires was turned around for a rear, is that process reversible or ? motorcycle came with 100/90/18 front and 110/90/18 rear, bridgestone spitfires , I never rode them as they were way out of date.

thanks again

Samuel
