Modern wheel bearing seals for R69

Post by joeR69 »

I am rebuilding the wheels on my '58 R69. I have chosen to replace the old felt seals with the modern seals. I have been advised the hub nut seal is the only modern seal used (with a newer hub nut), the inner/right seal stays a felt seal. A past post on this site stated the same thing. If I am reading the Barrington book correctly they are using modern seals on both sides of the hub.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Joe

Only the left side with new style hub nut uses the rubber seal
The right side only uses the felt seal

I think you need a different collar for the seal if you upgrade to the newer one also.

If you want to "upgrade" to the modern seal, you'll need three parts (per wheel):

36 31 4 038 230--$9.95--seal for hub plug, late style R50/2-R69S
36 31 4 038 243--$19.95--wheel thrust sleeve LHS for late hub plug R50/2-R69S use in 36 31 4 038 272
36 31 4 038 272--$74.95--hub plug late style R50-R69S requires a new thrust sleeve 36 31 4 038 243 and seal 36 31 4 038 230
