R60 seat

Post by FL54 »

New to me ‘66 R60. Been working through issues left by PO. Not sure that seat is OEM, so I thought I’d ask the experts. Thanks in advance.

Nothing looks OEM. The padded seat is in the style of a Corbin solo seat, but it might be homemade:

Those springs that are holding the back edge of the seat are definitely a DIY effort. I think I can see the stock t-bar under the seat...this is what the solo Denfeld/Pagusa seat would have mounted to and held up by the silent block. Looks like that got rid of the silent block, supported the t-bar somehow, and then added some coil springs.

Some pre-war twins had those kind of springs...some of the early post-war singles had those kind of springs. Maybe that's what they tried to do.

Thanks Kurt. I knew it didn’t look right and is consistent with the PO’s SOP. The seat is pretty comfortable so I’ll leave it as is for now. Could I get a silent block at some point and just eliminate the springs etc.? Thanks for the reply.

I'm not there but I kinda think so. If those two studs from the bottom of the seat align with the two holes in the t-bar, then likely a silent block would raise it back up to the right position.

If that's a DIY saddle, I wonder what's underneath. Could someone have taken a stock Denfeld solo seat and added the padding around it?

Upon further review, it appears he removed the block and positioned a piece of flat steel for the T bar to rest on and then added the springs etc. Perhaps he wanted to lower the seat. It does sit pretty low but I'm afraid of it hitting the rear fender on a serious bump even though there's no evidence that it has happened...yet.

I don't think it's a Denfeld.

I don't think it's a Denfeld. It looks very similar to a Harley solo seat except the nose is rounder.

Exactly what I was going to say, it looks like the seat of my 1948 WL45 HL.

Thanks San Arthur. I think I’ll try to find a silent block and make this seat work. Thanks for the help.

Bates?

Post by miller6997 »

That could be a Harley tractor-style seat, but it looks a little small to me. Could it be a Bates saddle? I had one of those on my first R69S, mounted on springs much like the one pictured in this thread.

Thanks Jon. Could very well

Thanks Jon. Could very well be a Bates. It has a similar configuration of a Harley solo but the nose is rounded off more. I ordered a silent block yesterday so I’ll see how it works. It’s not a bad looking seat and it’s comfortable. I’d just like to get rid of the springs and get the seat up and away from the rear fender.
