Pennies! Google on how to do this. Here's one youtube video:

Here's another way using a lever action; this is the way that brake spring pliers are used:

Might be hard if you don't have enough room to work under the bike.

Or nickels...

For those who are a little more daring with their currency, nickels work just as well or better than pennies.

hello loncar & greetings from Kentucky

I've tried the coin approach but was not too impressed. The springs may be more difficult to manage on ur bike than on mine but I finally just locked onto them w/ a big set of Vise Grips & pulled them on. Not too clever but effective in my case.
Good luck,
Butch

I had the same issue and here

I had the same issue and here is what worked for me. I got a Philips screwdriver with a relatively long shaft. I hooked the spring to the transmission and the free end to the screwdriver shaft. I used the notch of the Phillips to sit on the boss on the center stand. I was careful and the srewdriver didn't slip. As I leveraged the screwdriver to stretch the spring and slowly move the spring up shaft and got it onto the boss.

But.....

The coins between the coils is so dead simple and easy. Why struggle?

If you try the coins, here's how it worked best for me. Stand the spring straight up in your bench vise. Bend it over to either side to make space between the coils on the opposite side. Insert a coin as close to the bottom of the spring as possible. Then bend it over in the opposite direction and do the same. Keep going like this until you've stretched it far enough. If you insert all the coins on the same side of the spring, you'll end up with a circular, not a straight, spring. Works like a charm.
