Gas tank R51/3

Post by PeeWee »

Recentelijk I bought myself a schorsch meier gastank for my R51/3.
There is no toolbox at the top, wich wondered me.
The seller told that it's called a sidecarversion because of the fact that when you have a sidecar
you have enough storing space for your tools elsewhere.
Is there anyone who can confirm this story is true and such gastank existed ?

Gas tank

Post by speight1823 »

Looks to me like a BMW sport tank with the tool box cut out.
You can check by feeling in through the gas tank filler hole. If you have longish fingers you should feel the weld where the tool box used to be. Alternatively buy or borrow a mirror with a handle and you should be able to see the weld on the inside, with a bit of fiddling and using a light inside the tank.

If I am correct and the tank is a BMW sports tank it would not be incorrect for your R51/3 and will look very nice.
You should be able to find a wrecked R26 or R 27 tank . Get a panel beater to cut out the tool box and weld it on top of the tank. ( Be very careful of petrol fumes igniting when welding.)

The sports tanks in this part of the world are very desirable and well worth reparing.

Side car tank ? I doubt it .

Good luck

Bill

Gas tank....

This may be a Horex tank, but another photo, side view would be needed: frame tangs on a Horex are lower than BMW.

Tank

Post by speight1823 »

Can I correct my last post.
The sports tank , to my knowledge , came out in 1955 as an accessory to the early R50 - R69. They were only fitted as original equipment to the later R69/S , I think about 1967 .
I think your R51/3 would look better with the original tank , if you have one.
I am sure you could fit a sports tank but you will have to put up with comments that the tank is not correct for the model . A mute point as it was available as a BMW accessory up to 1969 or so.

Sport Tank

Post by niall4473 »

No it isn't, its a Meier tank, the Sport tank was made by BMW and came out in the late 1950's I believe, and eventually replaceded the Meier tank which was made by Schorsh Meier, (the company, not the bloke) which came out about 1952 to fit the plunger frame twins.
They are completely different tanks, which bear a superficial resemblance, the Meier tanks are not even identical to each other because they were all hand made , the Meier tank continued to be made, for the Earles fork bikes, although after the sport tank was introduced it was no longer a BMW approved accessory.
The front lugs, kneepads and mounts and most noticeably the toolbox lid are completely different.
I don't know why this one doesn't have a toolbox, it was probably made that way, as they were hand made it may have been cheaper without it, it would certainly have been less work.
I have a Meier tank on my R69 outfit, as below:-

from the pics it does not

Post by butch »

from the pics it does not look like the "Sport" tank to me. Tool box looks too long & the sides r not so "roundy".

Might just be trick photography tho.
