Hi everyone! A good friend of mine just bought his first BMW, a 1975 R90/6. (I have a 1967 R60/2). I have helped him a lot online, but he just sent me this photo of the timing cover. It looks like wear, but I do not understand it. Any advice or perspective on if this is normal, and if so, what causes it?
I had to look at other pictures to get a sense of what you're showing...I believe this is on the inside and where the camshaft comes out. It's also next to where the mechanical tachometer drive connects to the camshaft.
Can you determine if the wear was recent? Almost looks like it's been there a while. Could it be some "fitment" marks from the factory? If not, then maybe the bearing was getting sloppy and it wore on the inside? Any debris found on the inside of the cover when removed?

To me it looks like the lower hole in the front case were the camshaft comes through.There is no bearing in that position, just a seal.It looks like someone has used a socket or tube to knock the seal out and caught the side of the case.There is nothing close enough on the timing chain/sprocket to catch on the case.
Man, I am trying real hard to figure out what I am seeing in your picture. At first glance I would agree with BMstan but my teflon memory keeps telling me the cam seal is somewhere else and that is not a hole for a seal that I can relate to.
Here is a microfiche, The cam seal is #13 and goes into a hole that looks nothing like the picture unless you are showing the back side of the part? Can you post a better picture? If you have solved the problem, let us know what it is. St.
